Your skin in winter calls for more hydration
Description: In winter, your skin is proven to be drier due to the dry climate. It is super important to keep your skin hydrated (even more so) at this time, as it is a moment of water retention. So, come with us on this quick read and understand the power of hydration in winter! Estimated reading time: 1 minute and 26 seconds.
Mental note for winter: hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate your skin
Do you know what causes our skin to become so dry in winter? No? We'll explain!
The Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) explains that due to low air humidity and colder temperatures, a natural mechanism of our skin, the loss of water through evaporation and consequent reduction of hydration, is impacted, leaving the skin more dry and unprotected.
Another determinant is the fact that, as we don't feel as hot as in summer (when we sweat more, lose more fluids, and need to replenish hydration more constantly), we don't drink as much water as usual, and the skin is the first to feel this lack.
And, if you are one of those people who loves to take a hot shower to deal with the cold, be careful! The SBD also explains that this practice, when constant, can cause a more intense removal of the skin's natural oiliness. Thus, the lipid mantle (which protects our skin from microorganisms, and also from water loss to the external environment) cannot retain the skin's moisture.

Dryness & oiliness: understand the possible consequences
Among the main symptoms of dry skin in winter are:
1) Dull and devitalized appearance;
2) Skin flaking (especially on the nose, chin, and forehead);
3) Feeling of roughness, skin that is "thicker" to the touch;
4) Itching and allergies (due to dehydration); and
5) Whitish appearance (which indicates protein denaturation).
The opposite can also occur: instead of becoming drier, the skin produces more oiliness as a mechanism to protect against dehydration. In this case, a very hot bath further encourages the excessive production of oil by the skin (to compensate for what it lost), resulting in an oily and shiny appearance.
Furthermore, as our diet tends to change with the seasons, the colder time of year can be a great attraction for heavier eating, with more fatty foods, sweets, chocolates, and other foods that also stimulate sebaceous production more intensely. Therefore, be careful and try not to overdo it!
