HOW AROMATHERAPY CAN HELP IN BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
Health and essential oils have gone hand in hand for decades. Aromatherapy, besides being able to transform mental states, is a great ally in caring for physical symptoms. In the treatment of breast cancer, the incorporation of certain oils is a means of promoting well-being and addressing certain symptoms.
With an estimated 73,000 cases, female breast cancer is one of the most anticipated new cases between 2023 and 2025, according to a Fiocruz study. Even with this focus on women, the disease can also affect men, considering that they also have mammary glands and female hormones, accounting for 1% of cases, according to the National Cancer Institute (INCA).
Breast cancer is caused by the disordered multiplication of abnormal cells in the breast, forming a tumor that can invade other organs.
There are about eight warning signs for the onset of the disease. In 90% of cases, a palpable lump appears in the breast. In other cases, the following may appear:
- Skin and nipple retraction, giving the breast an orange peel appearance;
- Nipple discharge;
- Redness in the breast area;
- Small lumps in the armpits and/or neck;
- Nipple inversion;
- Breast swelling;
- Localized pain.
Upon confirmation of the diagnosis, after exams and professional help, the person will be referred for appropriate treatment, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.
Some essential oils can help reduce symptoms of breast cancer and its treatment, such as:
1. FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL

Frankincense essential oil is commonly known for bringing an uplifting and relaxing effect to the mind, being quite comforting. However, it is also great for promoting cell regeneration, and strengthening the immune and nervous systems.
The use of this oil is not recommended for pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy.
2. LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Called the oil of joy, Lavender essential oil has the power to stimulate positive thoughts and a feeling of well-being. Furthermore, as an anti-inflammatory, it can help with burns resulting from some treatments.
It is necessary to avoid using this oil in pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy.
3. TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL (MELALEUCA)

Tea Tree essential oil is a powerful stimulant for the mind and immune system. Being antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-infectious, it is an ally for immunosuppressed patients.
4. PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Bringing joy and improving communication, Peppermint essential oil helps clear the mind and aids in the transformation of intense emotions. It also helps improve the digestive system, muscles, and cellular oxygenation, thus being an ally of the nervous system.
Avoid using this oil in pregnant women, epileptics, those with a history of heart disease, or those taking homeopathic medications.
It is important to check with a professional whether the use of oils is recommended or not.
