What if social media ceased to exist?
Description: You've probably been asked before, "what do you do when no one's watching?" But what do you do when you're not looking at anyone? Without scrolling through a screen or thinking of replies to messages that invade your scrolling. Let's reflect together on social media use. Estimated reading time: 2 minutes and 17 seconds.
More mirrors, fewer filters
Looking at ourselves frequently allows us to see who we are beyond the filters. It's much more interesting to see your reflection through your own eyes, not through others'.
It's important to observe the time invested in your phone and the negative effects it has on your life. From there, it's possible to set new personal goals or reconnect with old ones that might have been put aside, fill your daily life with enjoyable activities that can also bring positive stimulation to your brain, and thus get to know yourself better as an individual who also functions outside the internet.
Have you ever wondered how all those images of other people's bodies - whether they're a snapshot from a friend's vacation or a celebrity's gym selfie - might be affecting how you see your own image?

Too much time online can be harmful
A good piece of content to consume to reflect on this is the documentary "The Social Dilemma" by Netflix (2020). The plot follows an American family that daily finds itself immersed in problems and conflicts - direct and indirect - due to the excessive use of cell phones and social media. Dinner conversation is non-existent. Punishments and time limits are imposed by parents on their children, but almost always without positive results. The children are abstracted from reality, engrossed in likes, videos, photos, and comments - positive and negative. The eldest son becomes increasingly attracted to a dubious political movement called "Centrist Radicals," and the youngest daughter finds herself in conflict with her image after receiving a negative comment about her appearance after posting a selfie full of filters and modifications.
With this documentary, we can see that spending too much time online - especially on social media - can harm not only your time and routine but also your mental health. It's hard to shield yourself from bad things when we're online all the time, isn't it? However, it's not impossible. Many say the solution is to delete all your social media. Others say it's fine, as this is the reality we live in in the 21st century. What we seek, however, is a middle ground.
