The benefits of antioxidants for the skin
It's common to see skincare products rich in antioxidants: "facial mask rich in antioxidants", "moisturizing cream with antioxidants", and so on... but do you know the real importance of this agent for our skin? No? Then come discover with us! Estimated reading time: 1 minute and 32 seconds.
After all, what are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are active ingredients whose main function is to combat free radicals and the oxidation of other molecules in the body. In their final effect, they act on the skin as an anti-premature aging agent and, when present in food, help prevent some diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.

There are two types of antioxidants:
- Enzymatic: these are natural antioxidant systems in our body, with the function of combating free radicals; examples include catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase;
- Non-enzymatic: these can be naturally produced by our body, but are also acquired through diet or direct topical application to the skin. Some examples are: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Beta-carotene, and Flavonoids.
But what are free radicals? They are unstable molecules that damage the skin and can cause premature aging. They are produced in large quantities by our body when we are highly exposed to pollution and UV radiation, when we eat poorly, consume excessive alcohol, and experience long periods of stress.

Antioxidants in skincare
In the skin, antioxidants combat free radicals responsible for accelerating the aging process, leading to the premature appearance of expression lines, wrinkles, and marks. They ensure healthier skin and enhance its natural beauty.

Contrary to popular belief, antioxidants are not exclusively for mature skin or anti-aging treatments. Although essential in these cases, they are also very important in the skincare routine of all skin types due to their effects against free radicals – they treat skin damage caused by stress and external agents such as UV radiation and pollution.
