HISTORY OF THE PLANT
This famous tree of oriental origin has only recently become known in the Western world. It was in 1950 that the essential oil was first distilled from the pepper-like fruits and began to compete in popularity with lemongrass oil.
In addition to being used as a flavoring agent in Chinese cuisine, it was also used in the treatment of cancerous tumors, as it was believed to have a carcinostatic property. Today, Litsea cubeba essential oil is widely used as an ingredient in soaps, perfumes, and deodorants.
This plant was named "cubeb" because its small round fruits resemble those of the "piper cubeba" vine, a plant native to Java. The tree's fruit also makes a strong condiment for meats, known as "sambal," and the flowers flavor tea. The oil is widely used in citrus-type perfumes.
The essential oil has been historically used in both Japan and Taiwan.
